Findings of the Household Survey on Information Technology Usage and Penetration and the Annual Survey on Information Technology Usage and Penetration in the Business Sector in 2002

The Census and Statistics Department released on 5 December 2002 findings of the two annual surveys related to the usage and penetration of information technology (IT) in Hong Kong conducted from April to July 2002. The Household Survey focused on IT penetration amongst households and IT usage amongst household members, while the Establishment Survey focused on the patterns of IT usage and penetration amongst business establishments.

According to the Household Survey, the installation of personal computers (PC) and Internet connections were becoming increasingly common among households. Some 1 322 000 households, or 62% of all households in Hong Kong, had installed PC at home in 2002. Among those households with PC at home, some 1 118 100 (85%) had their PC connected to the Internet, representing 53% of all households in Hong Kong.

The situation is similar for the business sector. According to the Establishment Survey, the percentages of establishments using PC and having Internet connection were 55% and 44% respectively in 2002.
