The North Lantau Expressway has opened to traffic on May 22, 1997. Work on the project commenced in June 1992.

The Expressway is a 12.5 kilometre expressway along the north Lantau coast, from the Lantau Link to the new airport.

It is the first highway to be constructed along the island's northern coastline.

More than half the route is on reclaimed land.

An interchange at Tung Chung provides direct access to the new town.
